Being mindful of the environment in the design process is so important! As part of an eco design module at university, we were asked to critically analyse the life cycle of a product, and redesign it for a reduced environmental impact. I chose the lava lamp - a cult classic, yet a woefully wasteful product. In my redesign, I addressed the intense energy consumptions by swapping out the incandescent light bulb with a tea light. It still provided the heat and light required to make the product work, and fulfilled the average use phase. Other strategies such as design for disassembly & emotionally durable design also helped deliver an exciting proposed concept.
